We brought the New Year in quietly in the company of friends overlooking the fireworks in Fells Point . . .

Although we broke with our Hungarian tradition to decorate our tree on Christmas Eve, we remained true to our customary fish dinner on that night. The rockfish turned out excellent, as did the saffron risotto. Still, the prize had to go to the chocolate madeleines. Lesson learnt: no more half bottles of champagne; go for full or better yet, the magnum next time ;^)

Traditionally, we've been decorating our tree on Christmas Eve. As a matter of fact, when I was a child, seeing the Christmas tree for the first time was one of the best presents every time. This year, however, we were given a tree way sooner, and although the tree still spent a formidable amount of time laying around in solitude on our porch, we finally lit up the house and the tree on the day of Winter Solstice . . .

Here's another timelapse sequence from the same day. This one is a bit more interesting in that there's more movement. It is comprised of 51 frames, that is 51 high resolution (6500x3250px) panoramas scaled down to fit into this entry.

Watch the sun rise on a foggy morning over the USS Constellation and the Prett Street Pavilion. I know it's not that impressive, unless you realize that each frame of this video is comprised of four photographs blended into one seeamless panorama. There's forty of these panoramas shot over the course of an hour, strung together into the video as shown.

Tony Deifell, author of Seeing Beyond Sight: Photographs by Blind Teenagers told stories of those taking the photos published in his book. The event was hosted by the American Visionary Arts Museum and earlier the day's events also included a "Seeing Beyond Sight Photography Challenge" workshop. Many of the images from it were shown. As further part of the evening's interactive art events, you could participate in making a 'tactile collage' with Baltimore artist Loring Cornish.

Like every self-respecting, pumpkin carving, candy freaking exhibitionist American, we too started the Halloweeen throwdown as early as possible and have already marked our calendars for the late ones. Our first official invitation (as that of a 100+ people) was to Housewerks', an industrial salvage company's hangar of a space littered with artifacts of now defunct or non-existent buildings once housing businesses, schools, churches, etc. The space is brilliant, located in historic Banyard Station, in the industrial park of Pigtown.

Time flies when you're having fun, even if it stands still on the giant brightly lit clock just as you enter Housewerks. I was also grateful for the light it shed in an otherwise - in proper Halloween mood, mind you - dimly lit space, nearly impossible to photograph.

We quickly discovered the bar, i.e. the kegs set up downstairs and relaxed to find that we fit in just fine with the other intergalactic creatures coming in no lesser variety then those in any of Star Wars' watering holes.

We were entertained by several performances, and here I primarily refer to the professionals, not the self-proclaimed party-goers. Hula hoopers, belly and fire dancers and a beat boxer made for a grant old time, and no easy challange to be captured.

Pumpkin Carving

This has been an unusually warm Autumn around here. There's no better way to measure it but by the number of days your Jack-O-Lantern lasts on your front porch. We are on our second batch in this panorama, and - likely - by the time you read this, we will be having our third go. Wouldn't wanna be without them for the pretty witches and handsome pirates come Halloween.
Or perhaps I just enjoy the carving and the baked seeds beyond my age.

The Bachelorette - at the Cat's Eye Pub

view panorama via flash | quicktime
And onto adult entertainment today (no, not like that). Actually, we did pay our visit (and i mean PAY) to the carnival rides too, but I spent a formidable amount of time drinking beer to the music of Steve Kramer and his Bluesicians, 20 year Sunday evening veterans of the Cat's Eye Pub. It would have been difficult to turn down requests from the bridal-party-to-be to photograph the bachelorette, who - judged by her farewell to solo life - clearly will be making all the right moves in her married one as well. Ursula Hicks never sounded better.

I have seen Tommy Buckets around town on numerous occasions, and have actually photographed him, but always under unfavorable panoramic light conditions. Finally, the weather and I arrived at his impromptu gig at the same time! You can find more on him on YouTube and MySpace, if you like what you see (and hear).

Professor Horn's Punch & Judy Show

Today was all about the kids. Professor Horn was with us at the Festival last year as well. As a matter of fact i photographed the show from the same vantage point, but how could one get tired of seeing the faces busting into tears with laughter.

I couldn't resist taking a picture here. Look at facial expressions of the audience carefully. Most moms look almost concerned that their children will have nightmares for days to come at the sight of the witch. Whilst the kids are rather intrigued, and many are raising hands to readily volunteer to be told their fortune by the green foreteller. Unlike their elders, they totally get it.

In any other town, Cafe Negril would have been our last stop, on the account of the late hour. But in New Orleans the rock-a-blues band, whose name escapes me at the moment only whetted our appetite, well, rather our thirst, to continue on 'til the not-wee-anymore hours of the morning. This was, perhaps understandably my last coherent image for the day . . .

Holt is - I believe - the only in-ground cemetery in New Orleans, and the one predominantly for the poor. Unlike the others, unprotected by marble blocks, it massively shows its abandonment and decay. Holt Cemetery, nevertheless will leave you evermore touched by the color spots of its ordinary memorabilia hangin on its crosses and stones like cheap trinkets on the girls at the tavern by the tracks on a Saturday night. Heartening and beautiful, where you would least expect to find it.

By now, I am adequately confused about wormwood and legality and pretty much everything else in regards to absinthe consumption in the U.S. I am pretty clear on the fact though, that when properly poored, it is a pretty awesome experience just to watch it even. Hope you'll agree.

Pat O'Brien's is a landmark of the sorts you expect to be filled with formidable old folk, and perhaps ordinarily it is, but as early as we started, mostly nobody should be and hardly anybody is in bars most anywhere. Well, we got great stories from the bartender this way, a fellow photographer with a considerable portfolio. I wouldn't do justice to describing the mood without mentioning the sounds of the twin sing along pianos coming from next door, from a room yet darker than this one - if you can imagine that.

So here's to prove that we weren't only drinking, but visited sights in between the watering holes. Now where exactly they keep that wine in here, we never did figure out. But then again, I was concentrating heavily on balancing my monopod several feet above my head, anchored in a somewhat obscene looking, protruding leather attachment on my belt.

Little did I know about the long history of Molly's at the Market when I was already anticipating my late night bloody mary coming off the airplane, so many of which I enjoyed here during my visit at Jazzfest time, earlier this year. But, really that's the only kind of history you need to wanna come back here for more. Now, supposedly the ashes of the belated founding proprietor are somewhere in there above the register, but since I only found out about it after my return to Baltimore, I cannot make it out in the panorama with certainty. Can you?

I know, I know: you're probably asking 'Why are you taking all these pictures of them tents?". True, I have been doing it every year since 2001, but there are no two of these creations that are the same, and getting immersed in these things once a year, is hardly enough. They are the hand crafted works of Architects of Air in England. I recommend google-ing them.
