Maryland State Police Polar Bear Plunge 2008
The Polar Bear Plunge took place in the Sandy Point State Park in Maryland and, in essence, it's a fundraising event for the Maryland Special Olympics. Qualifying participants, those who managed to raise at least $50 in sponsorship dipped into the 36 degree water.

Additional events included HugaPalooza '08, resulting in a new Guinness record by Josh Speigel of local radio station 98 Rock. The germaphobe radio personality hugged 1000 people within an hour (actually, 34 minutes).

The event reportedly drew some ten thousand participants and netted three million dollars in all, in no small part due to Ellwood "Bunky" Bartlett, Mega Millions lottery winner's million dollar donation.

Hence, upon setting the new Guinness record, it seemed only befitting that Josh Spiegel hugged Bunky, bringing his total hug count to 1001.
